3.3.1 Use a colon as a convention in salutations, citations, time, titles.

EXAMPLES

Dear Mr. Ellis:
5:30 a.m.
(January 2000):
342 Synectics: The Development of Creative Capacity

3.3.2 Use a colon to introduce a list or series when the words preceding the colon are a complete sentence.

EXAMPLE

The machinist regularly works with five metals: aluminum, beryllium, molybdenum, stainless steel, titanium.

Do not use a colon if the words preceding the list or series are not a complete sentence.

EXAMPLE

The machinist regularly works with aluminum, beryllium, molybdenum, stainless steel, and titanium.
