3.11.1 Use a period to signal the end of a statement or command.

3.11.2 Use a period (without parentheses) to follow the numbers or letters enumerating items in a list.

3.11.3 Use a period as a decimal point.

3.11.4 Use a period following some abbreviations. Most scientific and technical abbreviations no longer require periods. However, use a period if the abbreviation spells another word: in. (inches), no. (number), and so on.
