(Note: Conventions discussed in this section are based on the 14th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style and the 3rd edition of Words into Type.)

3.1.1 Use an apostrophe to indicate possession. Add an apostrophe plus s to singular nouns and indefinite pronouns to form the possessive.

EXAMPLES

Fire destroyed the companys data processing room.
The physician examined everyones medical records.

Add an apostrophe plus s to plural nouns that do not end in s. Add only the apostrophe to plurals that end in s:

EXAMPLES

womens locker room (locker room of the women)
schooners crews (crews of more than one schooner)

3.1.2 Use an apostrophe to indicate omission of one or more letters or figures.

EXAMPLES

doesnt = does not
01 = 2001

3.1.3 Avoid a common misuse that confuses it’s (it is) and its (possessive form of it), you’re (you are) and your (possessive form of you). Do not use apostrophes with such possessive pronouns as hers, theirs, or ours.
